Project Hope Worldwide to Host 3rd Annual Dinner and Auction at the Mayo Hotel - Sets Goal of $150,000 for Ugandan Orphans

Tulsa, OK – Project Hope Worldwide (PHW), a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization which has built an orphanage and school in Lira, Uganda, will host their 3rd annual fundraiser, “Kwero!”, on April 20, 2012 at 6 p.m. The event will be held at the historic Mayo Hotel in downtown Tulsa and will include a catered dinner, as well as feature amazing silent and live auction items. Entertainment will be provided by The Groove Merchants, the highly acclaimed Top-40 entertainment band from Oklahoma City. Last year’s event proved to be a huge success, having raised approximately $107,000, which went directly toward furthering the construction of the orphanage. This year’s theme, “Celebrating Transformation”, is a celebration of the redeemed 48 girls and boys currently living at the orphanage, called “Calo Me Lare”, which means “Village of Redemption” in the Luo Ugandan language. Board members and volunteers are predicting this year’s event to be even better with hopes of raising $150,000 with all proceeds going towards their continued efforts for orphans in Uganda.

Project Hope Worldwide was founded in 2008 by board members Derk Madden, Kelley Compton and Lyndon Becker of Owasso, OK. PHWW's mission is to care for and provide hope for orphans in Lira, Uganda who have been most impacted by the AIDS epidemic and 23 years of war with the rebel forces of northern Uganda. Their ultimate goals for Calo Me Lare are to provide a nurturing home, a quality education, sufficient medical care, an effective character-based mentoring program and a self-sustaining community that will empower the children to establish themselves in an eventual career and serve as leaders in their communities and country. In order to accomplish this, PHWW has been working to raise funds through private donations, corporate sponsorships and special fundraisers, such as Kwero, to build an orphanage, medical clinic and private school. PHWW is excited to announce a recent partnership with Tulsa Regent Preparatory School, which will help ensure the best possible education for the children at Calo Me Lare. Its 5-year Master Plan includes 16 fully furnished homes, which will eventually house 128 orphan boys and girls.

To learn more about “Kwero!”, purchase tickets, or acquire information about table sponsorship, please visit their blog at http://kwero2012.blogspot.com. And to view the most up-to-date progress on Calo Me Lare, visit the Project Hope Worldwide website at http://projecthopeworldwide.org or find them on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/projecthopeworldwide.

First Christian Church of Owasso to Present “Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts” Workshop

If you are planning on getting married in 2012, or if you have only been married for less than two years and would like a “refresher” course, then please make plans to attend the following workshop – “Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts.” This 4 week program will be at the Bailey Education Foundation (inside Bailey Hospital at 10502 N. 110th E. Ave) on Thursday evenings in March, 2012 – Mar 1, 8, 15, 29. Time will be from 6:30 – 8 pm. Primary teaching will be an excellent video series by Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott. Jim Schnorrenberg, Counseling Minister at First Christian Church of Owasso, will present the material and facilitate the group. Jim is also a licensed marriage and family therapist. Here are some of the lesson titles:

  • Have You Faced the Myths of Marriage with Honesty?
  • Can You Identify Your Love Style?
  • Can You Say What You Mean and Understand What You Hear?
  • Do You Know How to Fight a Good Fight?

Cost will only be $20 per couple (for the entire series) and will include his and her workbooks and refreshments each night. Those couples who complete the series will receive documentation to reduce their marriage license fee by $45. If you are preparing for marriage, then this is the workshop for you. Studies show that couples who receive at least 4 hours of pre-marital counseling have a much lower rate of divorce, and conversely, a much higher rate of happiness.

Space is limited, but you can sign up now by contacting Jim Schnorrenberg, Pastoral Care and Counseling Minister, at 272-9551, or email at jschnorrenberg@fccowasso.com. You may also register online at First Christian Church – www.fccowasso.com. (No childcare provided.)

Cherokee Nation contributes more than $179K to Tulsa County schools

CATOOSA, Okla. — Cherokee Nation distributed $179,434.86 to public schools in Tulsa County on Monday, Feb 20 at the tribe’s annual Public School Appreciation Day held at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Catoosa.

"This money is your money," Principal Chief Bill John Baker said. "It almost brings tears to my eyes, knowing we're about to give about $3 million to schools that need it."

The funding is mandated by a Cherokee Nation law that requires 38 percent of tax revenues generated from the tribe’s car tag sales go to support public education. Since 2002, Cherokee Nation has distributed nearly $25 million to public schools in the tribe’s jurisdiction. This year, 95 school districts in northeastern Oklahoma will receive $2,995,638.59, more than $260,000 than last year.

“The Cherokee Nation Tax Commission is honored to be able contribute to all our students education,” said Sharon Swepston, Cherokee Nation Tax Commission administrator. “We are able to do this by a generous contribution that is received from our citizens who exercised their sovereignty by registering their vehicles with the Cherokee Nation. This revenue is reinvested in the education of our future leaders and community family.”

Education officials along with tribal leaders were on hand Monday to discuss current school issues and receive their schools’ appropriations. The amount of money the tribe awards to each school district is dependent on the number of its students who are citizens of the Cherokee Nation. For every Cherokee student enrolled in their district this year, school officials received $131.94. The money was divided according to the disbursement of 22,705 Cherokee students in the tribe’s jurisdiction. Schools are free to use the allocation as they see fit.

“Last year the monies helped to offset the salaries of two certified teachers, one of several reasons we did not have to lay off any teachers,” said Dr. Clark Ogilvie, superintendent of Owasso Public Schools. “This year we intend to distribute the money back out to the individual buildings with their principals having the authority to buy items such as student supplies and supplemental reading materials. This money is a real godsend because Owasso Schools have been cut $4.3 million over the past three years. We wish to thank the Cherokee Nation very much for this financial assistance in this time of great need.”

COLLINSVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS $42,879.65
OWASSO PUBLIC SCHOOLS $56,996.96
SKIATOOK PUBLIC SCHOOLS $41,824.15
SPERRY PUBLIC SCHOOLS $22,825.17
TULSA PUBLIC SCHOOLS $14,908.93

At around 1:33PM today Owasso Police responded to a reported Strong-Armed Robbery at the Subway Restaurant, located at 426 East 2nd Avenue (76th St N) in Owasso.

Employees inside the store were immediately able to provide information that quickly led Officers to a home located near the 300 block North Cedar Street in Owasso.

No one was harmed at either Subway or the home.  North Cedar was temporarily closed and neighbors were asked to stay indoors during the initial stages of the incident.  Long and Poore will be taken to the David L. Moss-Tulsa County Jail.
