OBI ‘Birthday Blood Drive’ October 27 to benefit Owasso teen

All healthy individuals, ages 16* and older, are encouraged to give blood at an Owasso community blood drive to benefit Trace McWhirt who is fighting cancer. The Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) blood drive to benefit Trace is being hosted by Keller Williams Realty on Trace’s 15th birthday, October 27, 10 am to 4 pm at the Owasso Eighth Grade Center, 13901 E. 86th Street North, in Owasso.

Trace has received more than 250 transfusions of blood products during his treatment at The Children’s Hospital at Saint Francis. He was diagnosed in May 2011 with high risk A-L-L cancer and a rare chromosome defect. Over the next 18 months, his need for blood products will be ongoing as he continues his battle with cancer. Blood donations help support Oklahoma patients, including patients such as Trace, and credits from this drive will be offered to his family to help defer the cost of blood used.

Each donor  will receive the choice of a free Oklahoma State University or University of Oklahoma blood donor T-shirt and a chance to win a pair of tickets to the 2012 Bedlam football game.*

Oklahoma Blood Institute is the ninth largest, non-profit blood center in America.  OBI exclusively provides every drop of blood needed by patients in 144 medical facilities across Oklahoma including The Children’s Hospital at Saint Francis.

Any donor who wishes to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals - locally, The Children’s Hospital at Saint Francis - can forgo the T-shirt.  In turn, Oklahoma Blood Institute will make a monetary donation of similar value to The Children’s Hospital at Saint Francis.  It’s a chance to ‘doubly give’ to local children battling critical health conditions – through the life-saving gift of blood and in support of pediatric medical research and treatment initiatives.

“One in three people will need blood in a lifetime,” said John Armitage, M.D., president and CEO of Oklahoma Blood Institute.  “That is why we are asking everyone to show community support through blood donation to ensure local patients have the blood they need.”

Anyone, 16 years or older**, can typically donate blood.  Blood can be given every 56 days. To find out more or make an appointment to donate, call 877-340-8777 or visit

*Blood donation is voluntary, and no contribution, donation, purchase or payment is necessary to enter prize drawing.

** 16 year olds must weigh at least 125 pounds and provide signed parental permission, 17 year olds must weigh at least 125 pounds, 18+ year olds must weigh at least 110 pounds.
